What is the big deal with Snapchat?

I’ve had Snapchat on and off since high school. I finally bit the bullet and reactivated my account after a friend told me how fun it was. I still don’t get the app. The news likes to say that Snapchat is THE app for those who have something to hide. Pictures and chat logs disappear
